Introducing Diamond Cult

I recently started a new one man music project called Diamond Cult.

WARNING: If you don't like anything in the realm of "rock" don't bother. This is experimental electronic rock inspired by post-punk and Krautrock (and a lot of various bands from many genres).

These are the unmastered versions of the songs. As soon as the mastered files show up I will be making them available for sale as a digital single on my new label Verge of Light (click here for the VOL blog).

"The Angel of Decay" - Finished Painting

Here's the final version of my painting "The Angel of Decay." This is my first painting with a traditional "proper" title since I started painting seriously in 2007. I'm not going to make that a habit but it was appropriate to this piece.

Soon it will be on it's way to it's new home in the Land Down Under.

A while back my friend Chris Groves (from Cipher Productions / Night Science Magazine / Chrysalis) commissioned me to do a painting of the Angel of Decay "Bleeding on the Flowers" cover.

The original artwork was a sloppy pencil drawing done on scrap paper before I started taking art more seriously.

This is a (bad) photo of the work in progress. It's actually going to have a distressed red and black background and a lot of texture in the end. Chris and I are both happy with it so far.

Of course I will post a good photo once the painting is done.

Since we're on the subject, a certain Milwaukee noise entity known as Custodian has the same artwork tattooed HUGE on his arm but he won't send me a picture until he gets the black darkened up more. If that photo ever shows I will pass it on.

Eriek from EE Tapes and Christian Renou aka Brume asked to use my painting "Composite 2.4" for their "After the Battle" CD release. The metallic gold and blue is an interesting twist that I am pretty pleased with.

I've been interested in the Vienna Actionists since the early 90's but I just finally finished reading my first book on the subject. "The Art of Destruction: The Films Of The Vienna Action Group" is a good short overview of the group with a lot of excellent photos. After hunting around online a bit I was pleased to find the above film on YouTube (it's not work safe but not nearly as extreme as other Actionist films).

There are several Actionism pieces on UBU.com - my favorite two are the following (none of the below links are work safe either):

Malsonus.com Update

I have done a few updates to Malsonus.com for the first time in years. There's still a lot of old pages to fix and update plus some cosmetic fixes needed but it's in a pretty good state at the moment.

Most importantly, the STORE has been updated (including the limited edition Nekromantik LP). I got with the times and decided to stop charging extra for Paypal orders too.

And, holy crap, I even updated the brutally out of date LINKS. There are not only links for me but for several friends websites as well so make sure to take a look.

Here's my latest painting, "Composite 2.11" - 8 x 6" Acrylic on canvas. This and "Case 2.9" were done spontaneously, no sketches / underpainting or anything. I think I am going to continue with this technique for a while.

I have four more nearly done as well. You'll be seeing at least one or two of those soon.

The Exhumed Films 24 Hour Film Fest a couple of weeks ago screened this amazing 80's slice of action cheeze. They purposefully didn't tell you what movies were being shown, they just gave a rough description in their program. You just found out as they started playing. The program blurb for "Raw Force" said definitely one of the weirdest, most gratuitous, bat-shit craziest films of the evening. If not of all time. Ha ha. So true.

The good news is that the entire film is available to watch on YouTube right here (with violence and nudity intact). Enjoy the cheeze. I recommend a drink, or several, for full effect.

Well, it's about time right? Here's a new painting I just finished a couple of days ago. I intend on cranking out a lot of new artwork over the next couple of months.

I didn't realize it until the paint dried, but this reminds me a bit of one of my favorite old Pushead cover illustrations.

Paradise Lost - live in 1989

I have been listening to "Lost Paradise" this morning so I figured I'd share the doom. It's honestly the only Paradise Lost album I really enjoy (yeah, I know... but "Gothic" just doesn't do it for me personally). If you like death / doom metal and don't own this, shame shame I know your name. You can get it here.

Which reminds me, there was a very old book called "Doom Eternal" that warned of the torments of Hell. As soon as I saw that I said to myself "self, now THAT is a metal band name." I'm sure there are already 20 groups on MySpace with that name. That book "The History of Hell" I mentioned a few days ago listed "Doom Eternal" among a litany of other very metal sounding Hell related old volumes.

BTW - if you poke around on YouTube you can find more songs from the same Paradise Lost concert. It's also on DVD.

Nasum / Napalm Death Picture Disc

Well it's been a while but the Nasum / Napalm Death - Live Picture Disc LP just arrived in the mail. It looks GREAT. If you weren't aware, I did the above illustration for the Nasum side early last year.

The Pic Disc is limited to just 500 copies and it seems that no distros currently carry it. So, if you want a copy your only option is keeping an eye on eBay sadly.

There's always a chance the label will decide to repress. If that happens I will post a link to where you can get it.

I am currently reading "The History of Hell" after years of avoiding it. It's actually pretty DAMNED interesting (sorry).

Here's what Tertullian thought he'd get to see on the day of The Apocalypse:

For the last three years I have really struggled with the balance between making a living and my creative output. Sometimes I would have so many art and/or music related tasks going on while working my day job that I nearly had a nervous breakdown. I kept trying to figure out how I could just create full time and make a living at it.

Well, I have finally come to terms with the fact that isn't going to happen anytime soon.

Not only is the current economy a major factor but there is the constant temptation to make my creative output more palatable in order to make more money. So far I haven't made any compromises for the sake of cash and I am going to continue on that path.

I feel that all forms of art (music, fine art, writing, whatever) need to be done from the heart and to please the artist alone. To do otherwise destroys the integrity of the creative work. So, from now on I will create what I want, in my own sweet time, while working a day job. At times, I am may not be as artistically productive as I have been in the past. Please just keep in mind that this is my way of maintaining a balance (and my sanity).

So, if you like any of what I do, just be patient. My art and music will continue and you can rest assured it will remain sincere. I plan on pushing myself even further to create work that is more pure and EXACTLY what I want to express.

If I'm not going to make a living at it... why should I do otherwise? Now if I only would have realized this a LONG time ago.

Again, here I am. The beginning of the work week and I woke up at 2 am.

I took Benadryl to get to sleep and then Melatonin once I woke up to try to knock myself out again.

Nope!

So, anyhow... this is part of why you don't see much here at Black White Red these days. My day job gets very busy two times a year for 6-8 week stretches. I am in the middle of one of those busy spells right now. My creative activities and obligations always pile up while I am working all the time. And the stress. Oh the stress.

However, there are a few exciting music, art and related creative things coming up. I just don't want to announce anything yet.

In the meantime, I WANT YOU to please try and contribute to today's post over at Colors of the Dark. After I get some sleep I will be replying over there (IF there's any response that is).

The State of My Union

I noticed today that I am losing subscribers and regular visitors to this blog as I am regularly gaining them over at Colors of the Dark. This makes sense as COTD is a way to "entertain and inform" as this blog was back when I posted every day.

My day job is cranking up into busy season so my free time is even more limited than it usually is. That, in addition to the above mentioned facts, means that I will not be posting regularly here. I will only post when there is something worth mentioning going on in my creative life. Sometimes this will be several times a week, sometimes much less. Around the beginning of November I will probably do a little more over here as my job will slow down again.

I promise if I ever get a patron to pay my rent I will post here every single day. Ha ha. No... I'm not holding my breath either.

So, maybe consider subscribing using the Blogger follow thingy or just stop back from time to time. Also, keep in mind I am determined to keep posting at least once a day on Colors of the Dark no matter how busy I get. So far so good (so what).

Feel free to comment. I will be checking and happy to respond as time allows.

The NIGHTMARES Midwest tour is all done. I'm back at home a little worse for wear but happy.

You can read all about the tour over at Mark Solotroff's blog bloodlust.blogspot.com - there's also a few photos.

I just downloaded a bunch of photos off my camera. I will try to get through them this weekend.

As far as the availability of the three NIGHTMARES releases... I have none at this moment (they have to be shipped to me). Once I have copies I will do a post about it.

I've been making music for over 20 years now and this is my first time on the road. Weird.

Anyhow, I have no idea how much I will be posting between now and September 4th. I may do little text blurbs on how the tour is going if I get occasional computer access. Or not. I guess we shall see. Over at Colors of the Dark I am scheduling 10 days of weirdo animation to fill the void.

I will definitely post a tour wrap up with photos (I hope) here after I am home and have recovered.

Cormac McCarthy does it again

I recently finished reading McCarthy's "All The Pretty Horses" and some lines towards the end caught my eye...

"...he felt wholly alien to the world although he loved it still. He thought that in the beauty of the world were hid a secret. He thought the world's heart beat at some terrible cost and that the world's pain and it's beauty moved in a relationship of diverging equity and that in this headlong deficit the blood of multitudes might ultimately be exacted for the vision of a single flower."

If that isn't the truth, I don't know what is. It certainly fits into my worldview anyhow.

I wouldn't recommend this book over "The Road" or "Blood Meridian" but it was a definitely a good read.

The Young Gods and September Song

I have loved this video since first seeing it in the late 80's. It's aged a bit but it's still amazing considering the band probably made it for pennies. The end is particularly great.

I was always impressed by this weird Swiss post-industrial band that just consisted of an amazing live drummer, a keyboard player and a singer. I saw them perform live a little over 10 years ago and loved it.

The above video is from The Young Gods 1987 self titled debut album. It's out of print but you can get it over here.

The strange thing is that I have owned a few other releases by The Young Gods but never actually heard the debut until yesterday. Anyhow, I think it's great and I wish I would have tracked it down a long time ago. Their second album, "L'Eau Rouge" might be better but the debut is a lot more aggressive. I never got into any of their releases after the "Longue Route" EP as it seems the band mellowed. Those later releases may just be worth looking into now.

I just discovered another great music blog called nostalgie de la boue.

What brought it to my attention is the fact he has this amazing early BRIGHTER DEATH NOW debut tape "Temp Tations." Why Karmanik hasn't reissued this is beyond me. It's far better than "Pain in Progress" and several of his other releases.

New Painting - Case 2.8

I'm finally getting some painting done. Here's my latest one, "Case 2.8" - 8 x 6" Acrylic on canvas.

This is one of what will be dozens of paintings for my next solo show (scheduled for Summer 2010 at Germ). I gave myself a lot of lead time for the next show so I can work without pressure. I've made some decent paintings under the gun but usually I'm disappointed with rushed work in the end.

There's also talk about a very special group show sometime next year. I'll wait to elaborate until things are more nailed down.

NAPALM DEATH w/LEE DORRIAN

I recommend watching these on the HQ setting.

I was very very happy to find the above videos. The video and sound quality is very good, you can even clearly hear Shane Embury's classic "bulldozer" bass.

As I have mentioned previously I love early NAPALM DEATH. Lee Dorrian was the singer on all their early official releases up until just after these videos were shot. He had my favorite low growl style vocals, as cheezy as that sounds, and the band was never the same after he (and guitarist Bill Steer) quit. I do own a couple of releases with Barney on vocals and saw him with NAPALM live about three times but...

The above videos also represent my favorite little moment in time for the band. They had just released the "Mentally Murdered" 12" which I consider to be the best thing that NAPALM DEATH ever recorded (yep, even over "Scum"). If you like grindcore at all you really need to own either the "Death by Manipulation" CD (with "Mentally Murdered" as bonus tracks) or track down the original 12" vinyl on eBay.

It's really a damn pity that "Mentally Murdered" wasn't a full length LP. That would have been something amazing.

Molly Drake (1915 - 1993) was the mother of singer / songwriter Nick Drake. She was also an amateur musician and poet. I just watched the documentary "A Skin Too Few: The Days of Nick Drake" where his sister quoted this poem. "The Shell" blew my fucking mind. I am very rarely impressed by poetry but... it pretty much sums up my world view. That's me, looking out of the slit since I was a child. Everything I've ever created is a reflection of that. Sorry to get so cheezily deep on you but as I've said... I have to keep you on your toes.

The End of the World

I just finished watching the 1962 nuclear war flick "Panic in Year Zero" (click here for the trailer). I have been fascinated with "End of the World" type films since I was a child. So it was nice to watch one I hadn't seen yet. I thought "Panic..." was entertaining, very well made and thought provoking actually. You can actually get it as a double feature DVD with the CLASSIC "Last Man on Earth" DVD for just a few dollars here.

In these post apocalypse films the lead characters always fight for survival. That makes for some good entertainment but if I was personally faced with the end of civilization I would rather just kill myself. Under normal circumstances I am far from suicidal in any way. But I have lived for 36 pretty decent years with all the amenities of western living. Would I really want to experience humanity degrading down to it's very worst animal instincts in the face of disaster? Nope. Count me out.

Now if there was a glimmer of hope that civilization would return relatively fast, I might be willing to fight for survival. But if we look at what happened in New Orleans for instance... everyone in the population centers of the U.S.A. would be fucked in the face of a widespread disaster. Those few that survived would see and experience the worst shit you could imagine. Again, I'll pass.

Cormac McCarthy is a very smart man and an excellent writer. I think in "The Road" his vision of what post apocalyptic survival would look like makes sense. It also isn't anything I would want to deal with unless I had a DAMN good reason. At this moment I can't think of one. Everything that makes life worth living would be finished if civilization broke down. Maybe when the lights go out I'll change my mind but I doubt it. Let's just keep working towards keeping the lights on shall we?

Wonderful and creative things have come out of all this negative thinking... classic thrash metal, great movies, amazing books and check this out.

Jonathan has completed the artwork for the sleeve, so this release is on track for a mid- to late-August release."

I finally got a new painting done. I think it was worth the wait right? RIGHT!?! Well, I'm pretty pleased.

The title is "Case 2.7" and it is 10 x 8" acrylic on canvas.

My productivity in the painting department has been slowed by music. In spite of this I still manage to have one or more paintings in the works at all times. I hope to have a ton of these small pieces done by the end of the year. Maybe they would make up a solo show? Definitely a new chapbook anyway.

Francis Bacon Retrospective

SQ and I got back from NYC yesterday and are just beginning the recovery process. The SEXUAL ASSAULT RIFLE show at Wierd went great. We got some good photos I will post soon. We also went and saw JOSH HYDEMAN and COREPHALLISM last night in Philly and they were amazing. Photos from that coming soon as well.

Most importantly though... Suzie and I went to the Francis Bacon Retrospective at The Met yesterday. The above video is from the UK version of the show. Seriously, it was the single most amazing art exhibition I have ever seen. The show is still up through the middle of August so GET THERE AND SEE IT. If you can't make it you should get the beautiful catalog for the show. It's the best book on Bacon's work I have had my hands on and worth every penny.

Above is a very good fan video for Colin Potter's "I Am Your Shadow " from 1980.

Potter is probably best known as a studio engineer and and collaborator with Nurse With Wound but his solo music is just fucking excellent. In fact I personally like it better than any Nurse With Wound.

I have been listening to his early tape releases a lot lately thanks to Mutant Sounds. My favorite release is "The Scythe" from 1981, but I like everything I've heard.

Ha ha. Yeah, I sent my friend Andrea from Cripple Bastards some analog noise over four years ago for a collaboration. That's what they did with it. I love it.

You know, I'm not a big gore grind guy but SLIMEWAVE is a pretty damn good comp. You can get it over at Relapse.

Buried Inside - Spoils of Failure

I just got around to listening to the new BURIED INSIDE album "Spoils of Failure" the other day and I thought it was great. I don't like it quite as much as their previous album "Chronoclast" but it would definitely be ideal for fans of NEUROSIS and mid-period ISIS. I saw BURIED INSIDE open for EYEHATEGOD a few years back and they KILLED.

Lynch

If you're a fan of the man's work... you gotta see "Lynch."

It could have been a little better but it's well worth watching. I was definitely entertained and informed, plus I laughed out loud (in a good way) several times.

Here's an interview David Lynch did with one of my local papers, The Philadelphia Weekly, back in 2001. It was interesting for me to read considering I live in the city that inspired "Eraserhead." In fact, "LaPelle's Factory" that the lead character Henry supposedly works at is technically about two blocks down the street from my day job. Lynch worked for Rodger Lapelle back in the 60's. I mentioned LaPelle's Gallery in a previous post. This painting was the one hanging in back I mentioned before. Amazing.

Conrad Schnitzler

Here's a great little film of Conrad Schnitzler after splitting from the group KLUSTER. Too bad it has no subtitles.

I have been listening to the first two KLUSTER albums, "Klopfzeichen" and "Zwei-Osterei", a LOT lately. I really missed out not hearing these many years ago. If you like dark early exprimental and root industrial these are a MUST HAVE - trust me.

Recently I obtained a couple of early albums by CLUSTER (the same band minus Schnitzler) and while they are good, they are definitely lacking without old Conrad.

Conrad Schnitzler and KLUSTER must have had an influence on THROBBING GRISTLE although I have never seen them mention it. I have seen fans and reviewers state that those two KLUSTER albums were the birth of Industrial though. I went back and read what I have on hand about the formation of TG to see if they mention any projects that inspired them early on with no luck. All Music lists TG's influences as Faust, The Velvet Underground, Can and Silver Apples (?!?!). If any of you reading this have any more specific info on the connection between Schnitzler / KLUSTER and TG I would love to see it.

Native Son

I have been slowly tackling a 100 Best Novels list and just finished "Native Son" by Richard Wright.

The book is really amazing. I wish I would have read it 20 years ago. It's grim, violent, thought provoking and incredibly well written. I'm pretty sure any library in the country has this, so you have no excuse not to read it.

I was shocked to see it was made into a movie starring the author (poster above)?!? You can get it here (scroll down).

Colors of the Dark

So, what about good old BLACK WHITE RED? I will keep posting info on my activities and the usual recommendations etc that don't fall into COLORS OF THE DARK territory. I may not post every single day as I feel that this new blog serves a greater purpose (cue the angel choir) but I will try to keep up regular updates.

Thundarr The Barbarian

My favorite childhood cartoon was Thundarr the Barbarian which aired from 1980 to 1982. Above is Ookla, Thundarr's sidekick.

BLACKLIST Album Release

Wierd Records is having a record release party for the BLACKLIST full length release "Midnight of the Century" TONIGHT in NYC. I am sad I will miss it.

My girlfriend and I got to hear a preview of the album last month when we stayed at Pieter Schoolwerth's place in Brooklyn. For those who weren't aware, Pieter runs Wierd Records and also painted the BLACKLIST album cover (above). What I heard of "Midnight..." sounds AMAZING. I am looking forward to hearing the whole album in detail.
