Lynch

If you're a fan of the man's work... you gotta see "Lynch."

It could have been a little better but it's well worth watching. I was definitely entertained and informed, plus I laughed out loud (in a good way) several times.

Here's an interview David Lynch did with one of my local papers, The Philadelphia Weekly, back in 2001. It was interesting for me to read considering I live in the city that inspired "Eraserhead." In fact, "LaPelle's Factory" that the lead character Henry supposedly works at is technically about two blocks down the street from my day job. Lynch worked for Rodger Lapelle back in the 60's. I mentioned LaPelle's Gallery in a previous post. This painting was the one hanging in back I mentioned before. Amazing.

I absolutely worship David Lynch but I thought this doc "Lynch(One)" wasn't all that great. In fact it was a little painful to watch because it showed me in vivid detailed why I disliked "Inland Empire" as much as I did. Both docs, Lynch(One) and Lynch(Two), we're both shot during the making of "Inland Empire" and reveal all the flaws in what could have been a great movie. I could write a dissertation on what he did wrong in that movie but the main thing he did wrong was to shoot it himself on lo-res video cameras (Sony PD150s), without a real producer or director of photography. There was no one there to help him focus his genius and the resulting film was disastrous and nearly unwatchable. Without some life-saving performances by Laura Dern (who co-produced "Inland Empire" with Lynch...that should tell you something) the movie would be almost without merit entirely. All the Lynch magic is destroyed by a shitty camera, poor lighting and sycophantic toadies who scuttle after him. Both Lynch(One) and Lynch(Two) are almost a warning; Yes, even giants can fail.

You know, I didn't like "Inland Empire" either BUT the soundtrack was great. I'll give it that.

Thanks for the comment Ed.
